Welcome to Carlsbad, California! Today I am bringing you to a park where I have trained more than a thousand sessions in the past three years, helping people achieve their goals. I have a studio that I have built with much love over the years, but on sunny days (which we have a lot of here) my clients always want to train outside. I am filming here today because I will be doing some turkish getups and the usual spot on the cliff will cover me top to botttom in a thick layer of sand. So today, we are in the grass. A gym will do just fine too, I even do Turkish getups on my living room floor. For this session you will need ample space to move around, so outside is ideal because we are using a barbell.
The idea with this workout is to develop the technique of the turkish getup by using an unsteady weight that will slow you down and force you to concentrate. We will switch hands with every rep and keep the rep count low so that we can focus on the movement instead of the fatiguing muscles. The weight that you use isn’t important, but try to use something challenging enough to keep you in the zone. Find the center of the weight and balance the bar carefully while maintaining a solid grip throughout the move.
From this workout, we are going to progress to more challenging exercises with the same goal of building technique by using a barbell with one hand. Don’t skip this workout because the carry over to the rest of our training will be immense.
Todays workout:
Fourteen total barbell Turkish getups, alternating hands with each rep (seven per arm)
Watch the video to see the technique and follow my pace. Go slowly, be mindful, build strength and have fun!
