What is Kettlebell Training?

Most people have heard of kettlebells, although most have not used one, and of those who have, even fewer have used it properly. There is a big difference between lifting a kettlebell and kettlebell training. Kettlebell training is utilizing the three primary kettlebell lifts, the swing, clean & press, and snatch. The same vintage strongman culture that developed this tool and practice, also lifted dumbbells and barbells in lifts that all shared one commonality, they trained movement not muscle. We could say that exercises such as a deadlift, turkish getup, halo, figure eight, windmill, bent press, overhead squat etc. are still “kettlebell moves”. While most of them can be done with other pieces of equipment, they are in the spirit of the teaching, and will help you to develop the three primary ballistic kettlebell lifts.

What is Kettlebell Training? Kettlebell workouts have a reputation as an effective workout tool, working out all muscle groups for total fitness. Its all about integration and using your whole kinetic chain to lift weight to create functional strength.

You can use a kettlebell as a doorstop, that doesn’t mean you’re kettlebell training. If you are using them as a muscle isolation tool, or just making up your own lifts, thats great, let’s call that lifting a heavy ball with a handle. Personally, I think that is probably better than not exercising at all, and this person has my respect for putting forth effort for the betterment of their health. They are not, however, kettlebell training. As a practitioner, you should feel free to do whatever you desire without concern for what anyone else says. As an instructor, it becomes our responsibility not to coach anything that we haven’t become a master of in our own right. Remember, kettlebell training, and strongman lifting is a practice, just like martial arts. You wouldn’t enter a dojo and take lessons from a white belt who was making things up as they went along, would you?
